It’s fantastic to be part of a region that’s thriving and growing. Buyers from outside Wellington are moving here, the Expressway is opening up development, and there is growing demand for land.
There’s no question that house values are changing, fewer homes are on the market, and first home-buyers can find it harder to get into the market if they haven’t done their homework first.
Our Mayor has recently been quoted as saying there is a housing crisis in Kapiti. Many other regions around the country, and even the Government, have acknowledged there is no silver bullet when it comes to the housing market.
Solutions in Auckland are showing early results – land is being freed up for development, more homes are being built, and they are actively planning for the next 5, 10, 20 years and beyond.
The growing trend towards smaller homes and sections is also worth considering. While this isn’t the standard Kiwi quarter-acre dream, it’s something that needs to be looked at by Councils when it comes to planning and approving developments and subdivisions.
Later this week the Kapiti Social House Steering Group is holding a meeting to discuss Kapiti’s housing issues. It’s important we keep an eye on this important issue, as it’s one that affects us all.
